Adoption - BsideU for Life

When it comes to an unplanned pregnancy, adoption is a possible pathway. While it’s not an easy decision, you may want to know more. Adoption may fit for you if:

  • You are not wanting an abortion or to parent
  • The environment you live in is not safe or healthy for a child
  • You are not emotionally or financially stable enough for a child
  • You want your child to have a two-parent family who can devote themselves to your child

Considering Adoption?

Birth mothers these days have a lot more control over how the adoption process goes. Choosing an adoption plan that works for you is key. It’s up to you to decide how much to be involved in your child’s life. The decision is ultimately up to you.

Adoption Plan Options

To determine the best adoption plan for you, you may have to ask yourself the hard questions. What do you want your future to look like? What kind of relationship do you want with your child? Do you see yourself interacting much with the adoptive family?

Open Adoption

If you know you want an open relationship with your child and the adoptive family, open adoption is for you. With open adoption, you and the adoptive family exchange identifying information, including full names, addresses, and phone numbers. You then will discuss what type of communication works for you and the visitation arrangements, if any.

Closed Adoption

Some women choose a closed adoption due to life’s difficult circumstances, and that’s ok. This type of adoption plan allows you to remain anonymous. With a closed adoption, there is no contact with the adoptive family or your child. All identifying information is completely confidential.

Semi-Open Adoption

Lastly, there is a semi-open adoption, which is a mix of open and closed adoption. With semi-open adoption, you can still have limited contact, but a third party (normally an adoption agency) takes care of most communication.
