Abortion Pill - BsideU for Life

The Abortion Pill

Women considering an abortion via the abortion pill should understand how the process works and any possible risks or side effects. Being empowered with knowledge is the key to making an informed decision that’s right for you.

What Is A Medical Abortion?

Medical abortion is the termination of a pregnancy induced by a medication regimen. The typical protocol is for the administration of two medications with two purposes, which combine to form what is commonly referred to as “the abortion pill.”   As with any medication, it’s important to speak with a trusted medical professional before use to ensure you are protecting your health and safety.

How Does The Abortion Pill Work?

The abortion pill is comprised of two medications called mifepristone and misoprostol.Mifepristone works by blocking progesterone, which is a hormone produced by the body and essential to pregnancy. When this hormone is blocked, the uterine walls begin to thin, which causes the embryo to become dislodged.

Next, misoprostol is taken and induces labor-like contractions. This cramping then pushes out the detached embryo and pregnancy tissue.

What are the Risks and Side Effects?

Women should be aware of all risks, side effects, and complications that could arise when using this medication. According to the Mayo Clinic, risks include:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort

Side effects include vaginal bleeding, cramping, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, diarrhea, and headache.

The Mayo Clinic also has helpful guidance on patients who should avoid the abortion pill. For example, if you are on blood thinners, or possibly have a pregnancy located outside the uterus, the abortion pill is not for you.  See more avoidance factors here.

Want More Information?

The rules governing the abortion pill are frequently changing because of pressure on the Food and Drug Administration.  For example, you may have thought that the abortion pill is available or will be available soon at your local pharmacy.  That is not the case in Kentucky under current state law.

It’s also true that the later in your pregnancy you attempt to abort using the pill, the less effective it is.  The FDA has only approved its use through ten-weeks gestation.  If your pregnancy is not properly measured in age, or if you are farther along than you think, the safety and efficacy of the abortion pill may diminish.
